Simple XJ owner's knowledge test:
See if you can read this craigslist ad and piece together why it needs more work than he thinks.

2wd is its biggest downfall... And It doesn't get much better than the aw4 trans... It's really preference with Cherokees if you want auto/manual. Luckily they are both great transmissions. But I would say in no way is the aw4 a weak link...

I would love to have a manual Jeep for fun, but find the reliability and luxury of automatic to be great for the road. Especially for stop and go traffic (PITA when manual.)

I wouldn't go a dime over $1000 and that's because it's so clean. You're looking at at least replacing the head (no sense replacing just the gaskets when the head is prone to cracking) if not replacing the transmission, adding a transfer case, ect for 4wd.

[QUOTE=Jmb94;2297279]No, I would say the D35 is the weakest link. The front Axle should last forever in that thing though [/QUOTE
Yeah, because there are no moving parts in the 2wd front axle. Just a tube to hold the front of the Jeep up.

I probably wouldn't pay over a grand and still at that he's getting a good deal on his end considering you can get a good running 4wd non Dana 35 xj with mild mileage for about 2 grand....
