So tell me about the nss.
I have been having issues very similar to this thread here and it was recommended that he check the nss and it seemed to cure his issue.
now I only know the bare bones of the nss and what it does. I researched a bit and found a couple things that said it also tells the the computer what gear the transmission is in, or something along those lines. Is this true? Could that be why it fixed the issues in the thread posted above?also saw some articles but they only discussed about it controlling to only start in park and neutral.
so what exactly does the nss do? I'm gonna continue looking as well, but if anyone knows or has a better article then what I'm finding, please post. Thanks guys!

My issue... (the thread you linked) has come back even after cleaning the NSS. Although it does seem to be better than it was. Before it would act up so bad it was tough to drive at highway speeds at times. So...... I dunno. I will likely go ahead and replace the NSS for fear the lil springs are just overly worn before moving on to shift solenoids.

So I'm getting conflicting info again ahha. So are there 2 different part numbers for the nss for the later model years and older years? I think I narrowest it down that yes, the job of the nss was expanded later on, so I'm assuming there are different switches right?

Different part #'s because of different connectors. First link is for a '96 XJ. Second is for a '99.

Yup^^^ I actually picked up a supposed OEM unit off eBay for $40 today. Pretty sure my contacts on the arm and the springs are just worn beyond what a simple clean up will fix. They were pretty rough. I figure for the money it's worth a shot.

Ya... me too, for things like that anyway. I buy and sell a lot on Ebay. Check product reviews, feedback, and return policy. You always have buyer protection thru Ebay / Paypal if you get a crap part. That and I found more than a few guys on here saying they bought NSS's from there and been running them for quite some time without fail so I figured a $40 gamble was worth it this time.
