Shopping for used Cherokee
Hello,I am considering buying a used Cherokee sport.looking at years 94 to99.I am hearing 2 different things. Some people tell me Cherokees are good, other say they know people who had problems with them and they are expensive to fix.my question is;What years and models are the best to consider?Which should I stay away from?

The Cherokee is a very dependable vehicle as long as it is maintained properly. As with all makes of vehicles, neglect will lead to serious problems. The 4.0 engine is one of the most reliable powerplants used. It is common to see them with 200K plus miles and even up to 300K before needing a rebuild. Parts are not expensive and DIY maintenance is very simple if you have basic mechanical knowledge.
Every year of the Cherokee has it pros and cons. The biggest cons to stay away from are the 84-86 GM 2.8 V6 engines. Also try to avoid the CAD (central axle disconnect) front axle on the 91 and older models which can be identified by the extra vacuum shift motor housing on the passenger side of the axle tube. Not all 91 and older XJs have the CAD, and it is not something that should stop you from buying a XJ if the price. They are just prone to vacuum leaks that cause the front axle not to engage in 4wd, but have a variety of options to repair of eliminate the shift motor. Other than that, happy shopping. Just take your time, inspect each vehicle thoroughly, do a little research, and buy wisely.
