-If I had 4wd I would personally prefer np242 as well, I was talking reliability long term and in hardcore offroading/abuse.
I agree with so miles, the guy said its a lot of towed miles. He would drive it to auction and if he bought a truck he would tow the Jeep home. It used to be set up for towing but he has taken the tow bar and base plate off. It does have 3" Rough Country lift on it. I'm not real concerned about th build as I won't be "wheeling" it that often. If I were to make an offer what wold you say is a fair starting point? KBB puts it at $5300 from a dealer. Thanks guys for the input.

not a problem. I'll answer what I can
there isnt really a bad transmission from 91 and up. except the 2wd of course
89 and older have a bad 5 speed transmission.
you'll want the AW4 auto transmission paired with the I6 motor (all 87-00 automatic transmissions are the AW4)
but the transfer case is what counts. NP242 is full time. other option is NP231 part time
the way to tell the difference is when you shift into 4wd, the 'part time' light should pop on I believe
so year 1991-00
inline 6 cylinder high output
AW4 auto trans
NP242 tcase
you'll get the most power, performance, and reliability with that setup IMO
unless youre into stick shift. the motor does tend to last longer with the 5 speed

To the OP, NEVER drive with the transfer case in PART time 4x4 on anything other than soft/loose/slipery(snow), But if you get the select trac np 242 tcase, you can just leave it in full time 4x4 on your commute to work and forget about it

I know I said stronger, not better lol.... My buddy sold his np242 auto 1999 XJ and wanted a more durable Cherokee so he got an 1995 AX-15 NP231. From what I have heard about seems NP231 can take more abuse ?

Wrong, on the Np242, it has a part and a full time light, you can still put it in part time, you just have the full time option aswell. My 242 goes 2wd-part time 4x4-full time 4x4-N- low range. The 232 goes, 2wd-part time 4x4- N- low range.

but the RC 3 is add a leaf. I've heard that goes saggy after awhile
make whatever offer you can afford. if you have time, I would keep looking. and spend more time on this forum to find out exactly what you want
