My jeep is rear wheel drive and it does just fine in mud and small hills. Anybody have any good or bad experences with the rear wheel drive off road other than getting stuck. Im talkin about doing something that you thought you couldnt do in your 2wd but you did it anyway. Just good to get some stories around.
My 2wd is 1 week new so i dont have much time it, but i could pass up the chance to take it on some small hills. I saw a small hill about 3 foot tall and i decided to gun it without telling my passenger. He freaked out and we flew preety good. I was a gradual hill that droped off so i knew i would bust anything.

I have a 2wd with a LSD in the diff. It has gotten me to places and through places i didnt think i could make. Its amazing where i can go, but im sure most of it is due to the LSD. As long as you take the right line you should be fine

LSD stands for Limited Slip Differential. Normally only one wheel at a time powers the Jeep. If that wheel gets stuck it sends the power to the other wheel.....not good for wheeling. A limited slip will send equal power to both wheels but still allow the jeep to make turns without chirping. 2wd's can go a lot of places with a good set of tires and a good driver. I know I have gone places with mine in 2wd that others had to use 4wd.

I'm not exactly sure, mine is an 01 and it came with it stock. You'd have to find out if you have it or not. Im not quite sure on how you could do that besides getting stuck in sand or soft fine dirt haha and punching the throttle to dig yourself down haha, i did that and burried it to the axle. Found out i had a LSD for sure
wasnt hard to get out either lol

Now to tell whether or not you have one, jack up the rear of the jeep and support it on jack stands, with the transmission in gear rotate one of the back wheels. If the opposite wheel spins in the same direction then you have a LSD if it rotates opposite direction then your open.

I was doing some pretty seriouse mud ridding when my rear drive shaft broke I was close to the house so I took the drive shaft out turned around and had to go through a lot of the holes and ruts in front wheel drive. I did get stuck once but it did better than I thought it would have.

Another good test is while on a dirt road-from a dead stand still floor it to break the tires loose. it will automatically send power to the drive wheel and you will only have 1 tire skid mark. if you have a limited slip it will catch the slip and give you 2 tire skid (burn out) marks.
while mudding this clay road i would put it in 2wd and second gear and floor it, the lsd, posi or whatever it has would always kick in and send the back end flinging around. i also shot two equally sized tails of mudd from the back...man i miss doing that.
Always fun to do that, i do that on dirt road out here and drift here and there, but choose not to since i slammed into a straight up dirt bank with the rear quater haha
