square tubing...the round tubing looks like it droops a bit, which, to me, means less clearance

Are those pics of actual XJ hitches or general hitch pics? Our UHaul hitch is square but u almost have to get on your hands and knees to tell.

I have the factory hitch in back, and a drawtite up front. The square one in your post has the rec. part welded below the main square rail. Mine is flush welded for a little better clearance. (both front and rear.) I would go with the square tube, but get one that is flush welded.

I've got a square tow bar and all you can see is the opening for the receiver.

I like the square hitch - it complements the boxy look of the XJ.

However, aesthetics may take a backseat to engineering - pound for pound, round tubing (properly cut and joined) can be signficantly stronger than square tubing of the same size and wall. Quirk of material forms.

That said, if you get a quality hitch (Draw-Tite, Valley, or similar,) you should have no trouble going to the rated capacity - or somewhat higher, in a pinch! - with whichever you decide to get.

But I prefer the square hitch.
