Hey
My tires are shot and the rims are original to my 99 xj sport. I don't offroad in this thing but do much city and highway driving for commuting. I'll admit Ive never bought rims before and see some the cheapest on tire rack for 85 bones a piece. Are these bad news? Is there something about cheaper rims that I should avoid? Should I go with steel?
I am really just looking for some cheap black ones.

Go to a salvage yard and pick some up for dirt cheap (make sure they are round of course bad not bent and eaten up) in a pattern of your liking and then score you get the tires installed paint them with some automotive spray paint (I'm sure others have better ideas on painting wheels black than I do) and there ya go. Dirt cheap and black. But get new tres of course. I am getting Goodyear Wrangler Radials. They are basic AT tires with a lot of life and good all round statistics. And $85 a tire for what I've seen. Good luck to ya sir!

I run Cragar V5 steelies all the time.
I was running the 15x8, but I went with 15x10 when I upgraded to new tires.
Steel wheels are always super cheap, hard to destroy, and in my opinion, better for handling. Aluminum wheels are lighter weight, and typically look better, hence the price tag.

I only run steel wheels on my XJ on both sets of rims for the 33's and 35's. For DD the Cragar Soft Eights & 33's are what I run a 15x8" wheel with 3.75-4" of BS.
Steel is real stronger and will not break like Aluminum wheels will and can not be repaired like a steel one. You can find wheels from places like Summit, Jegs and others with free shipping remember you need 5.
These are the Soft Eights

Brand new from an online retailer they're around $58 a wheel. Unless you really can't afford the extra $8 tire, there's no excuse not to buy new. I buy mine from Morris who always has a 10% off coupon floating around, so there's even less of an excuse, esp when you get free shipping through them.

i like the stock style alumn wheels. they tuck inside the wheel wells nicely. can't stand the ones that stick way out of the wheel wells. looks goofy to me.. got mine for $100 off craigslist then repainted them..
if all you want is cheap black wheels (totally over done at this point in my opinion) then find a dirt cheap wheel that fits on craigslist and paint or plastic dip them black.
