Having started with a 2wd XJ I recommend finding a deal on axles with lockers already installed and swap to 4x4 then. You can swap 4x4 axles in before doing the trans/tcase. 2wd open < 2wd locked < 4x4 open/open < 4x4 open/locked < 4x4 locked/locked. You can skip right from 2wd open to 4x4 with at least 1 locker for fairly cheap. Thats how I did it

ya right. a locked 2wd would only be better if the open 4x4 had 2 tires in the air sending power to the other tire. in everyother instance 4x4 open is way better.

Can definately tell the one veteren from the few noobs here... lol. a locked 2 wheel drive vs an open diff 4x4 is pretty damn close to the same. open diff 4x4 = power to the 2 wheels with the least resistance... making it a 2 wheel drive. 2 wheel drive jeeps with an open diff, same thing = 1 wheel drive... 2 wheel drives locked = true 2 wheel drive, same as an open diff jeep. There's no tire with the least resistance to get all the power. I used to love offroading in 2 wheel drives... can get a bit more stupid around turns... lol.

That said, I would definately be looking at the 4x4 conversion and lockers so I don't have a 2 wheel drive being called a 4x4 like the rest of the n00bs.. My axles aren't locked (yet). The difference is, I realize what I'm driving...

BTW, guys that like those rims... aren't those just limited or grand cherokee rims painted black?

I would agree, however low range is also a big + on the 4WD vehicle, but if your going on mostly flat terrain, it wont matter...

Only reason I stated a LSD would be a good option was if he already had a D35, and was going to swap in a 8.25 (could get one with a lsd already) because if he does go to sell it most people wont want a locked 2wd, but an lsd wont stop them, and it would be cheaper then a locker for a d35...

However in 90% of situations a LSD might as well be an open diff IMO... seen a lot of people struggle with them to get them to grab (factory or aftermarket lsd'd)

Yes those are spray painted grand wheels lol

I see you're from UT and I'm from AZ. Out here we have hills and mountains which neccesitate using 4lo. I think the majority of the people on here are midwest and back east which is why they never mention 4lo. heck I remember a recent thread here of someone asking how to use 4lo

Not to get between you two and your argument but his original statement says "in theory" that does not necessarily mean that it is his beliefs. Technically an open 4wd vehicle will send power to the wheel with least resistance, which usually means your 4wd becomes a 2wd (one front one rear).
