Default Remote keyless system

I hope this is in the correct section. I bought a 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ (Not Grand). It has the little bubble on the roof for the keyless sensor, but i don't have the remote. How do i go about buying one. I have seen them on ebay but they all say for Grand Cherokee. Does the Jeep and Grand use the same keyless remote? I am scared i will end up buying the wrong one. Could someone steer me in the right direction on purchasing the correct one, model number websites etc and any other information. I will have to order it online as i am not in the USA.

Thanks to anyone in advance who can give me the correct information.

Cheers

I think it would be cheaper if you use a aftermarket system.Shipping alone on the remotes would probably be just as much money.

This is the remote entry, infra red system.
Clicker is part # 56009031
Used in XJ 1991-1996
ZJ 1991-1996

Programming is done yourself and only takes a minute or two. Instructions in owners manual. System can support up to 4 remote entry clickers.

Can anyone else please confirm if this fob keyless entry clicker #56021903 will also work on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee.

Thanks

Negative. That FOB uses RF, Radio Frequency like 1997+ XJ. 1996 XJ uses the infra-red system.
FYI, the infra red remote needs to be very close to vehicle and pointed at receiver to function. Unlike RF type that can be triggered from a distance and in any direction. Still better than using a key however.

The infrared system sucks at best. An aftermarket alarm system would be tons better.

Another character trait of the XJ! I put up with it because it is easier than dealing with the key, and then having to hit the unlock switch for the remaining doors and hatch. Just have to find that sweet spot where it works best, and window tint doesn't help any. ROFL

Find a used one, likely still $50 unless you can find one from a forum member.
1997+ require dealer programming.

For reference, here is a picture of the offending IR key.
