I have a question, my 89 Cherokee has had really good oil pressure for as long as I've owned it, about 4 years now. Up till a few weeks ago the oil pressure went from about 35 or so at warm idle down to 20 lbs. When I rev it a little the pressure doesn't move off of 20. I tried a mechanical gauge and it's the same thing. I parked it till I can get it checked out because I didn't want to spin a bearing or do damage.
If came down to a rebuild or replacement, would you guys rebuild or just get a crate? I'm still hoping it may be something fixable, but with 252 k miles, I'm not sure.

Cost wise you would be better off pulling a motor from a part-out.
If you are going to rebuild it you mine as well make a stroker motor XD
Rebuilds are much cheaper than crates, the question is how much time/knowledge/etc you have.
If it still has 20psi keep running it until it blows. You are in the rebuild zone for miles anyway.
Your motor may be fine. The oil pressure sending units can get finicky.

Makes sense, I'll start looking for a motor from a salvage and start getting parts together. Then do the swap when I get it done. I'm a pretty good mechanically, but my space and time is limited so I'll find a builder and someone that can do the swap for me.

Ok. To say get ready for a motor rebuild before finding any other information out is just dumb.
OP, what kind of oil and filter you using. Maybe it is almost time but don't throw ideas like that out before finding other information

I won't do anything before I find out what the issue is with my current motor. I plan everything I do. Just because I agree with the idea of a rebuild doesn't mean I will jump right out and do it. I weigh all of my options before I start spending money. Might be something with my oil pick up, don't know yet. But I will find out.
