Default Rear hatch lift support

I was wondering, is the lift support for the rear hatch supposed to make it open by itself once you've started opening the hatch, or is it normal that I have to help it a little push pushing it to the top?

Since I've had the XJ I've been wondering and never got to buy a new one because I didn't know if it was normal.

Also in cold weather it will have trouble staying open completely.

Thanks!

If its in good working order you should be able to open it a couple inches then it should open itself all the way, mine i help all the way open then it stays, a lot of people have the issue of not staying open at all even in warm weather

It may not lift it from the bottom, but it should hold it up. Yours are probably wearing out.

Is it normal for them to NEVER work. They are there for cosmetic purposes only. Your supposed to open the hatch let it slam on your head then use your neck to open it. Lol

Yes they are supposed to open the hatch. If you get a new set you will be amazed at the difference. If you come across a jeep with a hatch that stays up it really is a true gem. Lol

I like the sarcasm Of course I know it's supposed to stay open, but I was more wondering if it was supposed to open without any help.

Thanks for the answers guys, I will change it and see the difference by myself!

They really are supposed to take over once they get to the correct angle where they can. If you have good ones they tear the door right out of your hand.
