ok I have these numbers off the bottom of my rear axle, on the housing. 4384213, 2258,2. does this number say what kind of axle it is? I know its a 8.25, but not sure if its 27 or 29 spline, without popping the rear open and counting the splines. it has drum brakes also, and not sure if 29 spline has drum brakes too.

 

The 29 spline didn't come out tell 97 so yours is a 27 spline.And all xjs factory had rear drums on them.

 

right I know that, but I think someone might have put a 29 spline in.

 

Unless you pull a axle out and count the splines you won't know for sure.

 

This. And I can confirm that 29 spline has drums. But so does 27.

 

All xjs used rear drums no matter what rear end it has.

 

when I get around to pulling off the diff. cover, ill see if I can count the splines.
