Purchasing a '96 4.0
Right guys, i'm 17 years old, and really looking into purchasing an XJ for my first car. For the most part i've been looking at 2.5 TD's because i want a manual, but i recently stumbled upon a '96 4.0.
I first noticed it because i saw the photos were shot a stone toss away from my house, but then i noticed the price, and the fact that it isn't an automatic.
It's rolled just shy of 180000 miles, but looks in good shape. Supposedly no major rust. Only the odd rust spot, in particular on the exhaust. The guy is only asking $2800.
He's claiming 184hp, but stock it should be 190 right? (Although i suppose a few may have escaped in 17 years)
After this many miles, naturally i'm a little concerned about how many it has left in it. But i've heard mainly good things about the 4.0
I guess you guys won't get much from it considering the ad is in norwegian, but here it is: http://www.finn.no/finn/car/used/obj...nkode=44160713
Thanks for any replies in advance!

I've got a '96 and love it... Be aware it is a bastard year and some of your parts may be '97+. ALWAYS bring the part you are replacing with you to the store and compare '96 and '97 versions. I'm 198,000 miles and going strong.
i wouldnt worry about the mileage, i see that as an opportunity to learn how to work on your own vehicle and not have to pay crazy amounts for somebody that doesnt want to be there work on your vehicle (i work at a dealer) i see it all day long.
maintanance, fsm, good amount of tools and this forum..
have fun man.
just make sure if you live with your old man that he isnt going to throw a **** fit when you drop mud on his driveway.

Stock hp ratings are always off some are lower some are higher so take them with a grain of salt.As far as the mileage if its been taking care of it will run forever. We have members well over 200k and counting, And i found one with 612k on it but he bought it new and took really good care of it.If you want to read about that one http://www.allpar.com/old/high-miles/richey.php
