my buddy josh mann wants to trade me my ps3 for his stock evo8 turbo and put it on my cherokee...... stock turbo, piping, intercooler, wastegate, bov, plans on cutting down pipe and welding on evo header outlet to bolton the turbo probably has alot of turbo lag but should still open it up alot more.... anyone else boost the 4.0

ive tossed around the thought a few times since the xj already has a decent amount of torque for what it is, but no real top end.

anyway to your inquiry, it wouldnt be free, you'd still have to get it tuned. all turbos ive ever dealt with need to be tuned after install, running the piping will be a pita. getting a turbo meant for a 2.0l 4 cylinder to fit a 4.0l six is gonna be a ***** and also you might need forged internals, not sure how stock internals will hold up to a turbo.

just my .02 im sure someone else will come in who will know more on the subject than me.

good luck if you decide to do it.

im only gonna run like 3 to 5 pounds of boost if i do decide to go through with this ...... so forged internals shouldnt be need and its not that small of a trubo...... its bigger then my buddies turbo on his 95 mustang......i just got off the phone with him a lil while ago and said hes also got a turbo timer.... he got a newone with his turbo upgrade

never said it was small, said its meant for a smaller motor with only 4 cylinders. therefore the setup will have to be custom, which im sure you realize, and i was just commenting that custom turbo setups are a pita. imo

Sorry to jump in here, but.....
Why does everybody try and turbo or fiddle with intake mods for this motor?
A simple re-gear can net better results:

(article is for 2.5, but is applicable for 4.0)
Again, sorry if I'm out of line!
Good luck

When you built your other car did you install bigger injectors, auxiliary fuel pump? What kind of engine management did you use? When installing any kind of forced induction having enough fuel is always essential otherwise burning holes in pistons is the norm. I know Pro-Charger makes a complete kit for a 4.0 but then again it is a super charger and most definitely not "free" or as "exciting" as building your own kit. Just watch out for the AF ratio and have it tuned at a respectable shop with a dyno.

Sounds like a cool idea but you would really have to watch for detonation. I'm not sure wit only 5 pounds of boost but you may need to find a way to advance your timing. sgtskid has a good point you would have to get it dyno tuned to have any peace of mind at all. The afr's are very important, and detonation is a real concern. Just my 2 penny's though.

well with a fmu (fuel management unit) it ups the fuel pressure for every psi of boost

Another thing to consider is that a lot of items on your XJ run off of the manifold vacuum. When you generate boost, they will not function properly. HTH!!

Sooo not worth the time and $$$ on making a header, piping, setting up intercooler, tuning, figuring out fuel etc.
