Km2s all the way... 35x12.50x17s:

Havent wheeled this set yet, but my old 88 had km2s.. sweet tire.. grippy, and nice treadlife.
Also my toyota crawler had 35" km2s...gripped like hell and treated me well. Id say they really shine in the rocks, aired down to about 10 psi..Here they are on my yota:

I got 31x10.5 km2s on the 01 35x12.5s km2s on the 96...they've both performed awsome on and off road...and gets me through, over and up whatever northeast ohio has to throw @ them...I've never owned mtrs so I can't really say nothing about them.

Here are some pics. I have the KM2's. The 2 red jeeps I wheeled with last year. Both very similarly set up, one on KM2, the other on MT/R. They are also related, so wheel a lot together. I asked about differences, and they said it has been a wash. Neither has been notably better than the other. As we wheeled that day, that is what I saw on the rocks as well. They grabbed nearly identically.
I have 2 and a half years, around 16,000 miles and no complaints on the KM2's.
It comes down to what you like the look of, mostly. The contact patch is bigger on the MT/R's (even though they are both "12.50"), so they actually seem bigger. I think the MT/R's look tougher.
I think you would be happy either way.
