Default Please describe how to switch to 2WD and 4WD...

I'm gonna be test driving a few XJ's this weekend and I've read some posts here in my research that suggest to try out the shifting into 2WD and 4WD. Since I do not have a manual to tell me how to do it, would you mind explaining how it is done so I don't ef things up? Thanks!

As long as your not traveling faster than 45 or 55 miles per hour, just pull up on the lever.

Its typically not good to drive around in 4wd on dry pavement.

For 4lo, come to a complete stop, pull to 4hi, move the lever over to the right slightly, then back further.

This, of course is if you have the standard 2hi, 4hi, and 4low setup.

There is a full time setup that is fine for dry pavement, but not all models had that style t case.

Here is a link that may help...

some jeeps have a full time option. the indicator will be in green and listed as 4-full time on the 4wd lever bezel. this one you can use on dry roads. but to know for sure whether 4wd is working, you will want to be on gravel or dirt and gas it a bit. if the rear wheels spin you're only getting 2wd. this goes for 4hi and 4lo.
if 4wd was engaged, you shouldn't get any wheel spin, it'll be all traction.

if you only have dry pavement, go to a parking lot and shift to 4lo (you have to be stopped and in neutral), then when you turn sharp, you will feel it in the steering wheel. it should get a slight hop from drive line bind.
shift back into 2wd and drive away.

you can shift from 2wd to 4hi on the fly at any legal speed. no hubs to lock, just pull the lever.

If you don't wanna find gravel or attempt this in dry pavement you can also support the vehicle on jack stands with the wheels off the ground.
