Default Planning Out a Budget Stroker Build. Done It? Come Share. Also What Cam?

Since I got my Jeep and wanted to make it better I saw about strokers. I read over the material over a year ago and said to myself "Thats not bad I could pull that off for cheap." Well that time is near (as in hopefully this year lol) I figured it was time to discuss it in the chat section, since I'm not really building or doing anything, yet.

Mby it should be in advanced tech hmm.

This is starting now because Im getting a 95 block and head, with burnt out rings, for free (well not really cause I'm putting in the new engine) This will allow me to slowly build it up and drop it in when done.

The first one I really like cause its just a guy and his kid and they do it in a few months, he makes it look easy. Also good engine compression data

- I figure I can pull the 258 crank and rods from a junk yard for under $100.
- Find the best machine shop deal and get the block bored .30 over, honed, crank worked, block and head surfaced and valve grind, hopefully $250? Depending on cost I might try to port the head myself.
- This premium kit on ebay has almost EVERYTHING to rebuild an engine, including the cam which I'm going to call the company and see if they have performance ones or just not get it and have the price reduced. I guess I could resell the cam also, $350. Also going to make sure its a HV oil pump.
- Good head bolts, new valve springs and other head stuff $150
- A performance camshaft, dont know whwhich yet. $150
- Other misc parts/costs $200

So I think I can pull it off for under $1200

Does this all sound reasonable?

The questions I have now are:

1. I see there is a difference between 95-96 engines for kits, since this is a 95 I'll have to make sure what it really is. WHAT is the difference?

2. I need help with a cam. Im still learning what the numbers really mean. Basically I want something mild as this will still be a DD but will help low end and benefit the most from the stroker.

this is a long article on cams and how they affect engines, its based for street bikes but its the same thing
shorter article on cams with definitions at end

ive got some more reading to do but after going over it a few times ill understand exactly a cams effect on performance.

So im kinda thinkin this one its a low - mid range cam with a good boost
crane 753941

havnt i heard bad things about crane cams wearing bad though? just need to use high zinc oil right?

Im planning on 9.5-10 compression and running mid or premium fuel would be fine. If I baby the pedal it should get decent mpg with the more hp to use at higher comp and hotter fuel and good power when floored. Feel free to correct my logic im still learning.

so im weary of the ebay kit... it would save around $250 getting it after reselling the parts I wouldnt use (cam, lifters, oil pump) it says it uses all brand name parts but still who knows what im getting.

for ~$950 I can get EVERYTHING from summit which is the cheapest, even more so than rock auto and ebay on some things and where Im gonna get my other parts. I believe I'll end up with better parts and service overall going through them for everything.

Im pretty set on the comp stuff. still need opinions on how hot, the other was COMP Cams 68-239-4 but i think thats too much

HAVE I MISSED ANYTHING??IS THIS STUFF GOOD?? What about rockers kits, push rods? Theyre pretty cheap. If they need replaced I figure I should do EVERYTHING. Theres no time limit on this build so it can be done right.

I would stay with the 235 comp cam, the 239 will just move your power curve higher in the rpm range- not really what your jeep or stroker want. You should consider the '99+ intake manifold. A bigger question is what injectors are you going to use and what tune? 30% more power will require 30% more fuel. The low tech jeep efi ecu will not make the corrections.

yea I was pretty sure the 235 was where I wanted to be.

Ill be using a ported ho intake, tb and head. I read the 99-01's where restricted more than the 91-98 ho's? or are you talking about using a 99+ wrangler ones?

Ill be using these 24lb injectors, they should be big enough
and a hesco adj fpr

I can also adjust my map sensor for proper fuel/air mixture.

the renix is actually easier than the ho's to tune and the 97+'s are even harder.

Its out on the ground now. The new engine from the junkers came with goodies I didnt expect like the whole tb, intake, header, nice lookin injectors and sensors.

For $350, 199k miles 3 month warranty. not bad.

I asked while theyre if they had any junk 4.2 engines, well its hard to look up just an engine in their computer but they didnt have any cj7's or amc cars that he know of with it. There was a running 4.2 in a nearby town for 500, thats not what I need.

That was just one place though, I havnt looked elsewhere too hard. Need to print off a list of cars with the 4.2's it it.

when I start to tear into the block i'll make a build thread and copy over the important info from this.
