Default Paint opinion question

I just got done (i think) painting my 87 2 door. It was originally dark maroon metallic, but most of the paint was really faded, cracked, or rusted away.

I'm wondering, should I do a few layers of clear coat over the gloss black I've got on?

My thought is that if I leave the clear off, it will be easier to cover scrapes and scratches I manage to put into the paint. I can just grab the spare rattle can I've got, and *BAM* its back to lookin great.

Anyone know if this is a bad decision? Will the black be more prone to flaking and peeling if I don't clear it?

I don't mind the semi gloss, either. I'll have to get my fiance to log on for me and post a pic or two for examples...

I like the idea of being able to whip out the rattle can and do a spot repair. If you plan on trailing this rig a lot, leave the clear off. Mostly street duty, clear it if you want. I would like to see an XJ ot ZJ with the flat black all of rat rodders use.

Its kinda hard to tell from the pics, but this is really close, with a small, TINY amount of gloss.

After seeing the paint when it was dry, I actually thought to myself, "This is krylon's GLOSS black?!?"

Me either. I hate work computers. I'm not even sure what pics were posted because I had my fiance do the work from home!
