Default opinions on carpet removal...

So I have a 2001 sport with 113k and I am having a huge debate with myself on either keeping the decent condition black carpet in or pulling it all out and bed lining the floor pan.

I guess I'm posting this thread to get others opinions, pros, and cons, etc....

I have already cut out the carpet under the rear seat to free up a little cargo space.

My main concerns are exposed wires under the carpet, and other various thing like under the back seat.

Do you have bad rust?
How does removing the carpet in the back free up some space?

The prob with pulling it is the gaps it leaves in stuff like the center console. I stay pull it coat the floor to prevent rust and see how you like no carpet. If you decide it's not for you put it back it. Just make sure when you remove it not to ruin it

I guess I would assume that there isn't much rust under the carpet as there isn't much under the body. Its both my daily and my trail rig. I go out on the trails a lot and I always end up getting the carpets pretty nasty. I'm getting quite tired of scrubbing them clean. I'm wondering they make a weather tech floor mat for the xj.

I cut the carpet out under the rear seat where the factory bottle jack goes. My jumper cables, first aid kit, tool pouch and other misc. Things fit much nicer there now.

I guess having the huge gap around the center console scares me quite a bit. :-/

One of my first mods was bedlining the interior. I pulled all the seats, trim and center console out. I put the bolts back to keep the threads clean. Then i rerouted the wires so they were hidden under the trim instead of the carpet. Wire brushed it, vacuumed it and rolled on herculiner. Its been great, looks good and is awesome to clean. I just stick a garden hose in one side and use a scrub brush and some dish soap (after pulling floor plugs). It been bedlined for 6 years now and looks as good as the day I did it. The only downfall is that the floor gets hot in the summer and theres a little more road noise. Overall I think its worth it.

If your worried about wires they sell that black plastic wire loom stuff at any auto parts store,Run it over the wires and zip tie them out of the way.If road noise bothers you give it a extra coat or bedliner or get some thick rubber floor mats for it.

Taking the carpet out was the worst thing I did to my old jeep.

Why? I had to take mine out as my Jeep leaks like the freaking titanic but I'm curious why you didn't like it.

Oh. I live in western Washington, hot isn't really an issue except 3 days a year. Louds not really either cause I blast my stereo. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.

If its in good condition bedline it and slit the carpet so its removable when you wheel it to keep it in good condition. The heat is less if an issue than people make it out to be and its great in the winter.

The heat sucks ***** in summer without a/c. Even doorless on the highway.

Living in Virginia, which means hot summers - much more than New York's - and the heat isn't that bad. The only spot you get heat from is the trans tunnel and you can easily remedy that. I say pull the carpet, buy some stuff called FatMat (it's on ebay. it's a knockoff dynomat). It acts as a heat shield as well as a sound deadener. Put that on the trans tunnel. Bed coat the whole interior with a good roll-on bedliner (not the cheapy spray on junk).

As for the wires showing, just reroute them behind the lower side trim pieces.

Oh, and the center console gap isn't that big. With the bedliner you barely notice it.
