Default Opinions on 31's or 35's.

Okay guys I need some opinions. I need to get some new tires for my XJ in next week or two.

I'm having a hard time deciding on what size to go with. I am going to go with BFG All-Terrains I had them on my Yota and never got stuck in the mud or snow.

My XJ has stock axles, Dana30 in the front and a 35in the rear. I'm planing on throwing in a Ford 8.8 in the rear this August and regearing the front to match, 4.10's is what I'm thinking. Its got a 8" lift, trimmed fenders. Posted a pic to get the idea.

But for the time being I cant decide if I want to go up to a 35 or down to a 31. I have 33's now and the power sucks! I have a fine time wheeling since I'm in 4lo most of the time but I do drive my xj daily with highway every now and then. Hence why I will be doing the axle swap and gearing later this year. I feel like the 31's will make it look like a shopping cart due to the lift. Ideally I want 35's and could deal with the lack of power to the pavement till August though the 31's may be more reasonable.

Anyway let me know what you guys think. Especially if you've had 31/35's and how you think they do trail wise. I wheel a lot of rock and loose dirt. Minor winter wheeling.

It'll look ridiculous with 31s. Too much lift in my opinion. 35s would be nice, you've got the clearance. On a d35 that's pretty risky though, but once you get the 8.8 in then no worries.

8" even with 35s seem like a bit much. I'm running roughly 6.5" with 38s and mine actually measure 38" whereas the BFG 35s will be barely 34" on a good day. Power wise the 4.10s won't be much of a difference than what you have now unless it's a manual with 3.07s. The difference between 3.55s and 4.10s isn't really noticeable. You'll need something closer to 4.56s to make up the power with 35s.

Auto or manually tranny? I'd be running at least 37s at 8" of lift personally. Dana 35 wouldn't like that very much though

boooo A/T's the km2's are a sweet tire and do great on the street. they would be my number one pick just by how well the form to the rocks. get those. 35's are gonna suck for awhile but I'd do 35's and just deal with it until you can swap and gear up

if your looking to have a good combo of on road off road look into maybe lowering it a a bit and lean toward the 33s but then again if your going to regear go 35s

35's and bumpstops. I didn't vote because 35" bfg a/t's seems silly. Get some m/t's and look right. Not sure why you want to put 31" a/t's on because its your "highway DD" after you lifted it that high...

Alright you all have twisted my arm, I'm going to get the BFG M/T's in a 35.

It's my DD just until I can pickup another vehicle I got in an accident a month ago that totaled my other vehicle. I only drive maybe 18-20 miles a day so the XJ is getting me by until then. But I do want it road worthy since I would rather not have to trailer it to the trails.

You might do some reading on Dick Cepek Mud Country's. Not too much talk about them on here but the guys who run them LOVE them. Awesome looking tire, sturdy, good road manors and sipped (some...) for snow/water. I did my research on them and pulled the trigger. They were cheaper than BFG m/t's and performed better in some reviews I read of them. You can check out pics of them in my build thread, 'cept mine are just lil 32's...

How tall is your jeep? From ground to roof? Just curious

How long will you use your new tires and how big a deal is money to you in replacing them later on?

For your height 31s are WAY too small and your axles aren't going to run 35s worth a damn. I'd stick with 33s, but even then you're still too tall for them imo.

Why do you need new tires? They look like they've got plenty of tread left on them. I'd keep them and work on getting the 8.8 in and regeared before replacing them and go to at least 35s when you do.

Also plan on regearinge the 8.8 cause those 4.10s won't be much help with 35s. You'll have the same power or less than you do now with the 33s and 3.55s. The 4.10s would be perfect if you were running 31s but 35s will require something a bit lower.
