I'm going to go a different route... I agree you don't want to take the whole vehicle, for risk of theft reports or absorbing a lien against the title. But, if you only want it for parts, why not make the guy an offer for the parts? Make sure you get a bill of sale with his info and the list of parts you buy (just in case)

When you pawn somthing, the pawn shop owns it untill you pay them back the money owed. Sounds like he is trying to get 2x the money by not paying them back and having you buy it.
