Default Newbie here. Rear diff. Change.

Hey guys. I'm new on here and am looking at getting a 94 XJ. Talked to the guy and he said the rear limited slip is a little worn and makes a little noise. And after he opened it up said it's the differential. Does that mean I would have to replace the gears in the axle? If so how much do you think it would cost and how hard? I currently have a 01 wrangler TJ and am looking to get this XJ. thanks for the help!

Take it to a shop if you want to purchase it first, for a presale inspection. Tell them about the rear diff. If you have to replace the gears, yes it is costly. Also difficult, if you don't know what you're doing. If you have a shop do it the labor cost will be high as well. How's your mechanical ability? Check and make sure what axle it has as well, if it's a D35, walk away, unless you wanna do a full axle swap.

An axle swap is the cheapest and easiest fix.

An axle swap would be the easiest and cheapest, but maybe not for a self-proclaimed newbie. It depends on how much he's willing to get his hands dirty. Might be better off just getting one that doesn't have differential problems.

A swap with a junk yard axle from another XJ only requires simple hand tools. Rebuilding the differential is a lot more involved and requires some specialized tools for proper setup.
