Default Need sound advice

I've been into off roading since the early 1970's . I've primarilly wheeled buggies and an older Dodge 4x4 .

I'm now interested in a smaller rig and a versatile one as well . The Jeep Cherokee has caught my interest as a candidate . My questions are as follows .

1. What model to look for

2. what engine

3. should I go with the automatic or standard transmission

4. do the automatics need modifications to survive

Any tips will be appreciated .

Thx Gonzo

IMO..... 97-99 best years( hp 30, distributor), inline 6 engine only, auto xmsn are bulletproof and manuals are more fun. I would add a large xmsn cooler. I've owned 4 so far ranging from 89 to 99. Good luck. 2000 and 2001 models are good too.

Thx for the reply bamfxj,

I understand the inline 6 but do I consider only those with the hp30 distributer ?

I'm also not familiar with the XMSN transmissions . Is there more than this automatic in the cherokee ? How do I tell them apart ?

Sorry I'm so green .

Sorry about this mix up...... XMSN is an abbreviation we use in the marines for transmission. XMSN=transmission. Hp30= high pinion 30(the front axle). 2000 and ups have low pinion 30(not as off road applicable). All Cherokees 1999 and earlier had distributors...... 2000 and after have coil packs(distributors are easier to work with).
Hope that fixed that.
One auto transmission and one manual transmission for the later models. Good luck with the search, look for something under 125,000 so you can get a good amount out of your xj. Any questions.... Ask freely.
