Default Need help Buying my First 99 XJ!

Hello Cherokee Forum Community!

Have been browsing around the forums for a little wile now and finally just signed up.

I need advice, and help regarding purchasing a decent XJ i found locally. Its a 1999 Black Cherokee Classic in pretty good condition. and i want to know if the guyvselling it is asking too much or not, and if i should jump on it and get it. I already went over and checked it out, and test drove it for 30 minutes down a highway, on a small dirt path, tested 4x4 etc. Man was it Really fun to drive!

So here are some details...

167,xxx original miles

Clean Title

2nd owner (1st owner was a relative)

has all service records for vehicle

Upgrades: All done professionally by a local 4x4 specialist

3" ProComp Lift and shocks

Procomp steering stabilizer

ProComp 15" wheels

BFG A/T Tires

rear Hitch mount

kenwood head unit
_____________________________
He just had the vehicle serviced recently, and tuned up.

has new, starter, ignition Wires, distributor, brakes, etc... basically all the little things that tend to get tired after 14 years.

Vehicle has never let him down.

Has absolutely NO body Rust.

No leaks

no overheating

A/C, Heater work great

engine sounded good. no odd noises

transmission worked great. shifted very smooth even when i floored it.

Transfer case worked good too.

Fluids where clean and seemed to be pretty new.
_____________________________________
The Cons:

Tear in driver seat from getting in and out (Not a big deal)

Belt, or pulley squealed when engine was started up for 1.5 seconds then went away. but seemed to come back under acceleration some times

Front left door speaker didn't work (assuming wire short from opening and closing door)

Front Passenger door does not go down (Motor still works, just broke that common spiral regulator plastic i'm sure)

Driver side door window pops when put up all the way (assuming stripped spiral wire)

Driver side master console master lock doesn't lock (pushing switch to the left). But unlocks (pushing switch to the right).

Little things here and there like the driver A/C Vent adjustment dial is missing (cant adjust vent)

Kid Stickers on rear passenger windows from his kids (going to have to scrape them off)

body has a few dings on the right rear passenger door

Bumpers, or end caps seem to have had a few touched up with a spray can for little scratches, or what ever.
_____________________________
Now comes the price.... he Wants $6,800 for it...And i think thats a bit steep. I know he put a lift and stuff on it but still. am i wrong?

The Base trucks KBB private party (Without all the upgrades, etc) is 4,500 in excellent condition..but i would consider this very good, to Good.

167,xxx miles (i know not a big deal for this jeep from what i read. but still alot of miles regardless)

Needs some work done that's going to come out of MY pocket. Stuff i listed above (Windows fixed,Speaker fixed, Squeal fixed, misc Broken interior stuff,etc..) witch will add up.

And what ever else i find along the way.

I figured i would offer him 6k TOPS! But i want your guys thoughts on that. what should i pay for this!?

What do you expert XJ'ers Think this thing should go for, and how much i should offer him?

This is going to be my new DD. I'm without a vehicle right now due to some guy not paying attention one afternoon in rush hour and ran a red light... essentially totaling my 2002 Mazda 626 with 78,xxx on it. so now i want to get an XJ like i always wanted with my insurance money for the right price and condition.

I would tgo no higher than 5k but all the issues add up fast. Keep looking...it isn't going to sell quick at $6800.

You seem to be very conscious of cash flow. As I've learned in my 6 months of XJ ownership. It's kind of like owning a boat, "a hole in the water into which we dump money"
Don't get me wrong, I love it but it isn't cheap. That XJ looks very nice. A bit more up front than I'd be willing to spend but it looks to be in great shape and the lift, wheels and tires are already there.
Motor looks clean but there are some suspicious stains on the pavement.

Okay IMO that is too steep at 6500, yes it does have a lift, tires, and the body is straight..... But if I where you I would buy a stock one with as few mechanical issues as you can find for between 3000-4000. Then assuming you still have a budget of 6500 or more you would have money to build the XJ the way you want! Lift and tires of your choice ect.. With all that said the current XJ in question looks great and it's widely believed that 99 was the best year (I have a 99 sport so that might be slightly bias).... You should find out what kind of rear axle it has before you buy it if that's what you choose to do. And if I where buying that one I would start at 4500 and max out at 5000 not a dime higher! Look there where 2.8million XJs made from 1984-2001 so you could find a better deal if you where patient!

What's the going rate on other XJs in your area? Seems like a normal price for a stocker in So Cal but these Carolina & Georgia boys seem to be able to pick up XJs left, right, and center for under $1k. Seems like TJ pricing

Nice looking Jeep, I think I'd give about 5k tops for it, but I'd try for less.

Thanks everyone! I live in the Nor-cal bay area. The going rate seems to be around the 3k - 5k range based off of other cherokee's I have seen around I think. I knew 6800 was too much... I was willing to pay 5500 for it.

Tried to talk him down but the guy didn't want to budge much.. He was willing to go down to 6500 when I was there last lol before he started saying the usual "man... I got 2k in the rims and tires. Etc...6500?" lol I was planing on going back down there but I'm going to tell him outright your asking too much for it and that's why you still have it after a month or soo of being on the market, and other cherokee's are selling around it before anyone even bothers to give you a call.

I'll keep pushing for lower. But if he doesn't want to budge then oh well. Still looking daily.

come to Florida we have all the cheap xj's. I got my wife a clean 97 with 190,000 miles and bad water pump for $525. I put a 2" lift, new shocks, and got a deal on some 90% tread 30/9.5r15 ats and have $875 in the hole jeep.
