Default Mounting HI Lift jack on exterior of vehichle bad?

Just got a Hi Lift jack. Thing is pretty sweet. I've seen alot of people mounting on there roof rack, hood etc. Won't this make it more succeptable to rust? I'd like to put it on my hood but dont want a rusty spring to break when I need it the most. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

it should be fine but if you're worried just put it in the back. Or make some sort of cover for it

Get the neoprene cover they make for it or mount it where it will keep mud and grit out of the climbing pin mechanisms. Judging by your pic, the hood ain't a good place.

If you just bought it new it should have zinc coated hardware (gold colored) should last out side for a while.

Keep it covered and clean and have a lock on it so it don't walk off on its own.

I have had my Hi-Lift mounted on my roof rack for over a year now. It isn't showing any signs of rust yet but the paint is starting to fade. I also have my spare on top and have them cabled and padlocked together to the rack. Not had a problem yet.

Default Hi Lift

I had similar concerns regarding corrosion and sand. I live on the beach and the salt air and blowing sand create havoc on anything metal or with moving parts. The hi-lift mechanism would not last.
I mount the bar on the roof or rear bumper. The foot and lifting mechanism store in a bag under back seat. The handle tucks beside the driver seat and is not noticable. When put together it still fits on the roof. Also, nothing rattles, the hi-lift can make awful noises.
Jackguard.com is a good option. It's a plastic hard case. Only problem is it looks like an assault rifle case. I have one but do not use it.

I just mounted mine on the front bumper.

Used my old sway bar links cut them down and welded. Sits nice and with the rubber bushings doesn't move or rattle to much.

Yet to see if it does any damage. Of course it will not be there during our winters here in Michigan.
