I saw an ad today in CL for 2002 WJ. Owner said he heard that he heard that Mercedes built the engine in this vehicle. It had 225,000 miles on it. Was a 4.0. Anybody know if Mercedes built MOPAR engines at any point? I have not heard this myself before this morning.

In 2002 the company was Daimler Chrysler, there was a joint venture in the Crossfire which was built on a Mercedes platform, and may (I'm not 100%) have used a Mercedes engine. As far as I know MB never touched the 4.0 though.
Probably another case of a CL seller talking out his ***** to make his item seem better in some way. Although I wouldn't want a MB engine with a quarter million miles.
Edit: ...or was it Daimler Benz? Either way, pretty sure Benz didn't have much to do with the Jeep brand or any related components in general.

In 2002 the Company's official name would have been Daimler-Cyrysler, the Daimler-Benz name was used from 1926 until the merger with Chrysler and the name was to changed to just Daimler when Chrysler was sold to Cerberus.
The biggest influence Daimler had on Jeep was killing the XJ
(which was still selling well even in its final year) and the WK Grand Cherokee (which shares its platform with M/GL-Class).
