Default Max stock tire size 2000 XJ

Couldn't really find this info listed anywhere in any of the stickies, so I figured someone here could answer this quickly:

With no mods involved, using the same stock 16" rims, what is the max rubber I can put on the road without any handling problems/ rubbing?
Can I go 245/75s?
Or 235/75s?
I think I saw a 30 - 9.50 here somewhere on a stock XJ, which is darned close to a 235/75.
Thanks for any help.

I got 235/75's on mine and i feel that there is plenty of room. I guess a thinner 30 inch, like the 9.50 would be just fine and not rub a lot if any

235/75 is max on 97+.
30's will rub slightly on bumps.
31's will rub on fenders and lca's most of the time.

Use the search feature because this question is asked almost every day.

30x9.5. and the suspension is even sagged a bit. it rubs a little on the plastic inside of the fender well, passenger side only.

I ran 245/75's when mine was stock. If I loaded her up too much the rears would rub the inside fenderwells. No other issues and handled great.

I didn't even know I had 235/75s on mine until I got tires the other day. I had read off the stock size off the door to the mechanic and he called me to let me know that I would have had a slight problem putting those on and leaning

Glad he let me know, I like the bigger tires.

That's all pretty good info - I knew I came to the right place.
Which would make the better choice:
235/75s or 245/70s? with 16" rims.

235/25.4=9.252
9.252*.75*2=13.878
13.878+16=29.878
basically 30X9.25

245/25.4=9.645
9.645*.7*2=13.50
13.5+16=29.5
so, 29.5X9.6
basically the same thing... no difference visible by a naked eye

Learn something new everyday. I did not know that any XJ's came with 16" wheels stock. This is not a flame, but an actual comment. After reading this thread I looked it up and sure enough, they did.

Yep - I know the specs on them, I just wondered if a little wider tread on a smaller diameter tire would be better than the reverse.
Maybe I'll just keep an eye open for the one I can find with the best deal!
Thanks, so much.

With cut fenders and the moldings ripped off 30 9.5 assuming you dont have sagging springs work fine. Most people that keep a stock rig and just want bigger tires dont cut there fenders and do stuff like that but the XJ has plenty of room and ample of clearance its just hidden around all that extra plastic and stuff. I run larger tires and have alot cut off my XJ with BB, people often think I have a larger lift on it due to its apperance over a stock rig. Theres room there you just need to help it out alittle.
