YES!!! My wife's 88' will overheat easily. It eats through at least one thermostat a year. During the summer you have to leave the cap on the pressure bottle loose or it will blow.

IF by some chance you do get a closed loop system, I would highly look into converting it into an open system.

Oh wow u must be living in death valley then lol

My jeep has lived all its life in el paso texas. Its pretty hot here. The 3 years i had my jeep i only replaced the t-stat once only cuz i thought that was the problem, it ended up being a heather hose that was wasted.
My jeep stays under 210 mid summer.
The only time i over heated was on a wheeling trip, the reason was because the sand was so damn deep i had to keep it on 4 hi and first gear or else i would of bogged out for bout 20 minutes. lol Even after that it barely passed 210.
Not trying to shoot u down buddy but not every jeep is the same. either that or mine was built on a wednesday.
But if u have the cash yeah get yourself a open cooling system. Better than dealing with a pressure bottle.
But like i said all the pain goes away when i get better mpgs than the h.o. lol
Although i wish i had the h.o since i wheel alot more. But not too shabby for a daily driver.

If you like the older body style, get a '95 or a '96. If you go non-abs, you will receive the stronger Chrysler 8.25" rear axle. The nice thing about these two years is that the non-abs models received the larger and much stronger 297/760 u-joints up front. I like my manual windows and locks, as those are two less electrical gremlins I have to worry about. Get the auto. It is so very reliable and anyone can drive it. As said, watch out for rust. The sheet metal that these things are made of can get holes quickly! A diesel swap would be cool, but all the wiring and adapting that is required to do so would make me second guess it. It is a ton of work.

Hope this helps.

yes it would be a good idea...and as the guy a couple post before me said, i always think it is important to get all manual locks, seats, and especially windows. if you are going to be building it up and wheeling it more than using it at a DD i would take that into consideration. and i know i said this somewher in her earlier but you have to decide what you are going to be using it for, because i barely have people in my back seat and i wish i went with a two door because the front doors are so much bigger and nicer.

Yeahif u want an H.O. u need a 91 and up. 87 to 90 is a renix with a closed cooling system.
Its jus preference really, no matter what your gonna have a beast, as long as its a jeep.
H.O. has its advantages and disadvantages to renix and vice versa.
Also dont quote me but ive heard renix engines are easier to fix since they dont have a computer like the H.O. where they have to put codes an stuff. Its not a big factor but to some mechanically inclined it might.
Correct me if im wrong.

Diesel guy, you're posting the e-mail reply for craigslist. Copy the address from your address bar instead. Anyone that wants to look those up can copy the e-mail address into a google search and it'll come up. That '87 would be my pick, I love the Renix system and that thing looks like it just needs a little interior cosmetic TLC. The fact that he knows what axles are on it would lead me to believe he has maintained the drivetrain and engine... seems to know what he's talking about.
