Try not to get a D35 rear. Try to stay away from an 00-01 they have a bad cylinder head. Try to get a 231 tcase, more aftermarket options. The perfect year IMO is a 97-99

Look for a latter '90s model, 8.25 rear end and Dana 30 with 247 ujoints should be easy to find in those years. Avoid Dana 35 rear axle, 4.0 L is a good reliable motor, aw4 auto is good to, if you want full time four wheel drive than go with the np 242 t-case if not np231. 2000-2001 had a crack prone head so check it well if you want one of those.

To turn a wrench on I like the 91-95. However the 97-99 has it's updated dash but has a shorter drive shaft (bad). The result of a sealed out put on the case (good). I now have a 99 and for me it is a toss up. What will you be doing more of driving or wheeling? If wheeling I would say hands down 91-95 its just more basic and simple. And OBD1 means no emissions. Things to look for 231 t-case look on the shifter you don't want to see part time and full time options. It is with out a doubt a weaker and there for less reliable case. Also a 8.50 rear axle. You can tell it buy looking at it from the back it has a flat bottom. I would say to stay away from the late 00 and all 01 XJ's. They had issues with the heads making them not reliable and a low pinon front axle making it harder to get good down travel with out binding the lower ds u-joint
