Default looking to buy an 89 or a 98

Hello everyone im a newbie here. first post so bear with me.

im in the market to buy a used vehicle and i came across an 1989 cherokee 4x4 and i fell in love. its gorgeous. really. great condition and 130,000 miles for under 3 grand. its clean and really what im looking for. however i asked my dad to take a look on his way home yesterday since i couldnt get over there and it wasnt on the lot. according to the salesman it was getting its ball joint repaired? oh great. does this mean its not a good thing? I cant stop thinking about this Jeep!!! I have been told that it may have sat around and not been used in re to the milage. what issues should i be wary of. i personally have no problems buying this vehicle if its been maintained very well and in all aprearances it seems to have been. but then again im not very car savy so what do i know. i do know that this Jeep has inspired me. i want to know more about it. i want to baby this if this is a good Jeep to buy. I would love this Jeep!! im just worried that it will break down or im an idiot just thinking about it.

SO i went on to find a 98 Cherokee Sport. its very nice. twice the price of the first and the one issue i have is that its a theft recovery. Excellant condition and under 100k miles. 6 cylinder 4.0L L6 OHV 12v. 4wd etc etc.

I want to buy Jeep. Everyone i have talked to who has one or had one before LOVES them, and i really learned a lot about Jeeps and engines and etc the last few days. Everything else i looked at just seems so blah!! my husband had one when i met him and it was his other "girlfriend". we sold it cause our crazy dog jumped through the window and didnt have the money to fix it! it had over 250k 90 Jeep Cherokee.

I will be going to see the 89 next week. i just feel like i have to know before i can walk away. So im curious, what do you think? Thank you for reading. sorry for the rambling. im both excited and confused!

Just because a ball joint is bad dont mean the jeep is bad. Just make sure it's well taken care of check the floor pans for rust. Drive it let it idle make sure there's not noises and dosnt overheat. The 89 is called a renix jeep so they do develop issues that are weirder than the newer ones. I have an 88 with 187k on the clock. Runs well I had issues with electrical but mine wasn't very well taken care of. A member here named cruiser54 is the renix god! Any issues he will be able to help. The jeeps are pretty reliable as long as its the 4.0 I've never had experience with the 4 cyls. Make sure it shifts well runs well no major leaks. No noises from the axles and transfer case or engine or trans you should be ok

Oh an make sure all the doors open and close sound stupid but some times we over look things make sure the hatch and good open as well these are unibody SUVs and have a tendency to twist up offroad and if its been wrecked things won't line up as easy as if it was a body on frame design. My 88 2 door flexes when I put it on the lift as work and you can't shut the doors but it is fine when it on the wheels. It normal of unibody design

If you liked his 90, then you'll like the 89. Same classic look to it. Plus it's got low mileage and cheaper cost. So you could save the "extra" money and put it to repairs if needed. I'm kinda biased to the renix jeeps personally. By the way, mine is a 90 and had 116xxx miles for $2500.
