Default Looking to buy 1st Cherokee, which should I avoid.??

Hello all, newbie here..

I've only owned one jeep and that was an '88 camanche.. I still swear hands down that was the best truck I've ever owned, the 4.0 was an amazing animal.. It had 190k when I sold it to my brother, never touched the motor other than replacing exhaust manifold...

I've ever since admired the 4.0 engine and its capabilities..

My question for you guys: I'm looking to buy a cherokee 4x4 (4dr or 2dr is there an advantage chassis wise one over the other)?, prefer something between '90-'99.. Not going to spend a whole lot of money as I'm selling my old scottsdale 4x4 to fund this.. Is there something I should be aware of in any particular model?? I do plan to USE vehicle as 4x4 and do intend to moderately modify suspension and other areas as needed and money allows..

automatic, manual, 4 dr vs. 2 dr, grand cherokee or classic?, suspension, interior components.. things like that..

any suggestions would be great!!!

TIA,

Rob

I've owned an 91, 95, 99 and 01. I've had issues with the power windows in all of them, had to replace the a/c evaporator in two of them and the speaker wires in all four eventually shorted out. Also, be careful when replacing the rear shocks because it's easy to break the bolts off on the upper side. If you break them you'll have to drill them out. I haven't had any engine or transmission problems with any of them. I developed the infamous "death wobble" for the first time this week. I changed the steering damper and stabilizer bushings to resolve that issue. Overall they are solid vehicles and easy to work on. Good luck.

Since you are looking at 90-99 models, you have already avoided the worst years 84-86. For 90-91 avoid the vaccum disconnect front axle, although upgrades can be made to make them much stronger with little expense. 4 door models do have a slight strength advantage over 2 doors due to the extra body pillar between the front and rear doors. 89 through 94 with ABS have the larger u-joints in the front axle shafts making them stronger. All 95 and up have the larger front u-joints. 97 and up with the Chrysler 8.25 rear axle have larger 29 spline axle shafts, the earlier models have a 27 spline axle shaft, but with luck you may find a 96 with 29 spline shafts due to productions changes. Other than that happy hunting and be inspect any potential vehicle thoroughly. Take your time and the right one will come along.

Yeah i've also been looking around for my first jeep and was looking for the same years as you.

I really like the early 90's dash/interior so end up getting a 93 cherokee country and love it.
