Default K&N Air Filter Question

First off let me say that I tried to search for info on K&N air filters prior to posting. Don't know if I was doing something wrong, but I could find anything.

I'm looking at buying a K&N air filter off of someone. It's just the drop in type. I can get if from the guy for 20 bucks, but I'm just wondering if they are worth the money. What do you guys think of them? Thanks for the help. And sorry again if this has been asked many time before.

Drew

Alot of people here don't like them. They say they let more air through but also let more "dirt" through.

I have one in my jeep, one of the first things I did to it was slap one in. I don't know if they let in more dirt, since I haven't really dug that deep into my engine to examine such a thing. But I get a little better mpgs, little more throttle response, and now I don't have to buy a new filter every tune up.

I would recommend, since you are buying it from a guy, to also buy the K&N cleaning kit and clean the filter before using it. It's like 10$ and seems to have enough cleaning stuff to last a few cleanings, which don't happen often.

I've got one in my XJ and one in my wife's TJ.

I know "hot rodders" and racers use them. So they can't be all bad.

x2 on cleaning the used one right away.

CAMEI (I think thats his name) has some really good info.

Interested to see the responses on here, as I have heard (and I agree) that a snorkel is the way to go for the XJs if you plan on taking it through any mud and such

Not necessarily. Factory setup is fine up to a certain point, depending on how much lift you've got.

Not really. You hose it off, blow it clean with compressed air, and use the two chemicals K&N supplies.

I guess it just depends on what you plan on going through. I plan on getting a snorkel because they have mud bog races like 30 minutes from where I live and last time I went through the mud almost covered up to my hood..

Which is what I meant by "up to a certain point."

Mud up to the hood is well over the factory intake. Thats when you'd need one.

I'm doing a home made snorkel for mine. Hopefully this weekend.

Yeah I know, I was just re wording it lol.

What are you going to make your snorkel out of? I was thinking about doing a homemade one, cause I really don't want to spend $350+ on one..

After some careful research on here and some thinking I've decided on 3" PVC sch 40 spray painted black.

I'm not sure if I'll be keeping my factory airbox or not, though. We'll see.

I would not put another one on my car. They are the first line of defense your engine has at oil contaminants. (Second would be your oil filter..) Put something on there that will protect your engine from garbage. As a lot of people say around here about stuff "its cheap insurance" a quality air filter (oem, purolator, etc.) is like $7 bucks and the difference in flow will be minimal..

K&N is not going to kill your engine overnight by any means but they are proven to allow more debris into a engine. Overtime that is bad news for your DD..

I've been running one for a couple years and no issues..
I know my TB is clean so I don't think dirt is getting through.
I'm think dirt gets though from people installing them the wrong way.. That's my theory..
