I've never seen a 4cyl 97-01 Cherokee!
I've read that there are 4 cylinder Cherokees out there. I've seen plenty of the earlier models in 4 cylinders but to this day I have NEVER ONCE seen a 97-01 Cherokee in a 4 cylinder.
Did they not make them in those years or is there just a very small number of them out there?
Not that I want one, just curious since it seems to have eluded me.

I have a neighbor with a nice red 97-01 2 door SE with the 2.5L 4-cylinder. I park next to it whenever I get a chance.
They didn't make a whole lot with the 4-cylinder, probably because it wasn't very popular for the Cherokee. It's underpowered and actually has worse gas mileage than the 4.0L I6. I see tons of 2.5L Wranglers, though.

While we're on the subject, 2.5 MJ for a commuter truck? Yay or nay? I would like to have an MJ to go along with my XJ, so I'm thinkin a nice 5 speed 2.5 2wd.

Not to be a naysayer, but i have a 2.5/ 5 speed in my cherokee. With a 4.0 TB, CAI, and IAT relocation (about $40 in mods for me) I get about 26 mpg on 31's with the stock 4.10's. The only time the 2.5's are really underpowered is if you throw 33's on them with stock gearing as most wrangler owners do..
The trick to 4 bangers is in the gearing. With proper gearing for the tires you run they will pull just fine, but thats just my .02 cents

I'm guessing they never made the 4cyl in 4 wheel drive?
I used to have a 4cyl Cherokee but it was an 88. That thing was beyond what I would consider to be a 'dog'. It was basically impossible to pass anyone on the highway!
I imagine they probably would have sold too many 4cyl Cherokees from 97-01 but honestly I have yet to even see one with all the Cherokees on the road!

Very interesting. I had always noticed the A/C bypass belt pattern on the fan shroud, just never realized it was a factory option.
Nice to see another 4 banger cherokee on here!

So, you're telling me that your cherokee with all of that done to it is getting 15% better gas mileage than it was rated from the factory on the highway? You keep telling yourself that...
