Default I'm finally in the market again for an XJ...

This showed up today https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/5971116093.html
I am supposed to go look at tomorrow. It is pretty much what I want/like. 2dr, 4x4, and 4.0. Most 2drs here that i see listed are usually 2wd and 4cyl.

In his ad tho he says, "has an open title so not in any ones name at the moment." Not sure if I am just being paranoid or not, but I am taking that to mean he bought it and never transfer the title over to himself. And on top of it, in the picture it has out of state plates. I plan on asking him for details on this tomorrow before I go look, but wanted to ask. It's been awhile since I have been thru this process and have never dealt with an out state vehicle. Am I being paranoid for nothing?

And this one also popped up today as well...

2k cash takes it
daily driver
interior cage
4x4
rear is locked
i have front cable locker not yet installed
no shakes leaks or noises
does freeway speeds no problem
slip yoke eliminator
tcase was just gone through
rock sliders
harnesses
and much more
come get it
not really looking for trades

there is a good chance the first one won't pass emissions or a safety inspection if it is from out of state.

2nd one looks like it is well used.

I would have a pre inspection don on either of them before you purchase either.

That's illegal 110% of the time, it's tax evasion.
Title cannot pass from the previous owner through a non state licensed third party to you legally.

I used to buy and sell cars on the side and that is a issue that I avoided. Like Turbo said be aware that if you do buy it that you may be on the hook for tax's and any fees, fines levied against it.

Thanks everybody, I appreciate the advice. Definitely going to pass on the first one and I think the 2nd one as well. Would rather wait for something that is closer to stock.

Well, decided to go with something else entirely. Stock XJ's or any XJ for that matter are hard to come by in my price range. So, went today and picked up a 1991 Bronco with the 302. It's a $1900 vehicle so not without some issues, but a good running and driving start.

As always folks, thanks for helping out and answering my questions over the years. I'm sure I'll continue to lurk and will eventually be back once I get a Cherokee. Have a good one and thanks again!

Those are great trucks. Probably better / more valueable than Xjs in the long run unless its the Bronco 2. Their trannys are trash though. I have a 94 van with the same driveline I believe. Read scary stuff on the trannys, but my motor has 225K on it, and hauls the mail!

edit: and I have a Ford OEM replacement trans in there. Sticker and all! Ha.

So far, aside from an oil leak that needs to be tracked down (has apparently been there for quite awhile, oil and gunk everywhere underneath) and loud serpentine belt, it runs pretty good. The interior needs a lot of help, but all of the seats are there and in tact. It's a $1900 vehicle so definitely has some issues, but I good bones.

I like these and will continue to fix/restore what I can as I drive it, but eventually want to move on to a Cherokee. For now I have something that runs and is safely driveable and will allow me to get out of the city once in awhile when I want to, so pretty happy with it.

I haven't read much on the tranny in these yet, but so far I am seeing a lot of issues popping up about hard shifting due to the VSS. Seems to be a common problem.
