I need your alls opinion.
So For the last month i've been looking for jeeps on craigslist. I had made the decision not to get my dads 96 Xj Due to it not being 4wd. But now i've come to the dillema of whether to keep looking for a 4wd jeep or just buy my dads jeep.
I've been thinking about this, I can buy the jeep from my dad for $750, that leaves me about 4-500 leftover to dump into it right away. I can do a budget lift with shackles and spacers, Lock the rear ( detroit probably ), trim the fenders and fit 31" bfg ats or treadwrights, put some bumpers from XJpro, a roof rack etc. My question is, should i do this or just wait till i find a 4wd jeep? i'm running out of time, i get my license on the 6th or so.

I just did the sound system (lol like that's gonna help performance) and all terrain tires. I do plan to do a 2 inch lift soon. Tires make a big difference, along with skills and just knowing the road you're going and she performs pretty good!

You will probably live another 60 years or so, don't think you are running out of time. Get the 4wd you want and need. If you get your dad's jeep you will want the 4x4 down the road. To Hll with the other trucks at school, remember the sticks and stones rhyme, your no *****, your a jeep man. Now if you do your dad's truck, the parts you apply to it can be transferred to another XJ in the future so investments are not lost. The 2wd will be a more fuel economical truck to operate. A rear locker will go a long way, I suggest a Powertrax, best bang for buck. Don't rush your life.

I have to agree about gettin tghe 4x4. You will regret it later. One thing I learned is do right the first time. You could end up stuck with it when u realize that all u had to do was be patient.
I know its hard, esp when ur pops jeep is starin atcha, but wait. Get the one uwant.good luck.
