they are not really that rare. most newer xj and all 5spd tj's had them. but the 6spd tj's use a different tranny.
just be sure you're looking for one from a 4.0L. the 2.5 used the ax5.

the ax15 with external slave could get pricey. seen them go around here for 1500, but came across the odd one for 500. those ones don't last long.

Be out of your mind paying $1500 for an ax 15 ...I think $500 sounds steep for a used light duty trans .

How do you know? haha. I know of a few xjs around here with 5 speeds. Most of them are 95's and 96's and one of my buddies used to have a 99 5 speed just like mine. Didn't know the later years were all that rare.

Down south there definetly not rare haha, Could've picked up a 96 2-door 5-speed for $500 lol And how I know is because I spent literally 2-months calling around and going to every single junkyard within a 100 Mile radious of my home town and not one had a 5-speed XJ, the closest one I could find is in New Jersy or Northern Philadelphia...Same thing applies for talking to car dealers and going on craigslist, there are almost NONE In western NY. The only reason I got mine is because one of my friends had a friend and I got plain lucky..and i'll trade you my 98 4-door for your 99, I even have the orginal window sticker

Not that rare but vary solid trans. Some say bullet prof I wouldn't go that far but a good trans. They are hard to find cause with the world renound I6 and a dam good trans who is going to get rid of it. Found one in my home town in a crashed 98 xj. picked up the hole thing with a buddy for 550. Frame was junk and front axle too but solid motor, trans, and ton of spare parts. Keep your eyes open and you will find a great deal on one.
