So I'm thinking about getting a winch bumper and winch. I'm thinking about getting the Logan's metal winch bumper but the website says it's only rated to 9500 lbs so I'm wondering how much winch do I need? How stuck would I have to get to need 9500 pounds of pulling power to pull my dumb *** out?

 

The standard is 1.5x the loaded weight of your rig.

 

8k lbs is just fine...you can get a ****** block for it and double the power with a two part line.

 

So I'd only need 5 or 6 thousand lbs then , do you recommend anything? Is probably go for at least 7 thousand just for who's got the better winch points

 

just some food for the thought an 8k winch can only pull 8k on the first line. so a 6k after about 15 feet of line might only be good for 4500lbs. and it mainly depends on your type of wheeling. if you like to get muddy you gotta account for suction weight 8k-10k is typically the range for our cherokees 10k if you rut yourself out in mud or rocks 8k if you do light wheeling. also search button is your friend there are ALOT of good articles about winching you absolutely should read before even considering buying a winch. or save money by bringing a friend with you to the trails

 

Dirtyjerz has a good point, but that is getting a little over technical. If you get a 8k pound winch it will do what you need. If your worried about it get a ****** block and double your pulling power.
A few people I wheel with have full size trucks on tons, or heavy buggies and an 8k lb winch does just fine. Last time I was wedged between a few rocks the 8k lb warn on my buddies toyota dragged him thru the sand making the tires skid before it bogged down the winch.

 

I've seen a few videos on bleeping jeep, on one he threw a ****** block on a tree strap then back to his bumper . If you do that sort of thing would you need a stronger bumper?

1.5x loaded weight for winching on FLAT ground.. You might want/need more power, if there is a hill, rock or mud, between the rig and where you want to winch it to.

 

If I were looking to buy a winch, I'd use the same plan as when I buy a battery.

Buy the strongest one you can afford and fit on the vehicle. I've never heard anyone complain that their battery had too many CCA's, I can't imagine people would complain that their winch is too strong.

 

Yeah people get away with 8k-9k all the time, but I had a coupon for a 12k one that made it cost the same as the 8k one. So I snatched it.

There's nothing wrong with overkill, underkill can be a problem that can get you stuck in a bind.

I've got a 10k on my XJ and a 16.5k on my 2500 Ram on 40's.

 

Think about this.. About 10 years ago I got my ZJ stuck in a mud puddle... Stock ZJ, sunk to the floorboard. Buddy with lifted Chevy 2500 pulled me out, he has a 16K winch on his rig. we had to use a ****** block and some hard jerking just to get the ZJ to budge.

 

An 8,000lb-10,000lb winch is all you need or want on a 4,000lb rig. 12,000lb and over winches are heavier and can cause damage to your unit body rig, yes I know that it doesn't happen often but I've seen the winch to frame? attachment bolt holes tore with a 12,000lb winch. My .02.
