I see plenty of 97+ XJs around here, alot of them stock. Pre 97s though I don't see as often and when I do they're either all rusted out or in pristine condition. I've only ever seen 2 MJs, and one of them was spilling rust as it drove away.
I just been woundering about this. I know their is a poll of how many Cherokee XJs were build "Post link to that" but is it possible to know how many of our Cherokee XJs are left in the U.S.? I think once a vehicle is gone/wreaked the VIN gets a Salvaged title. Does those get recored to some database?
Cash for clunkers was a ****ing joke. They would lt you trade in a perfectly good 12 year old XJ to buy a Toyota...it didn't do anything but make the japs more money and waste energy and resources building new cars.
The 4.0s don't go down without a fight, but its sad to watch...I know a few we're saved before being killed and crushed though.
As for how many are left? 2.8 million were built, nowadays, I'd say around 1.5 million are still on the road...you see them by the dozens, and here in the northeast you dot see many 10-15 year old vehicles in the same numbers as you do XJs.
There's a ton left, but they aren't going to
Make more anytime soon, we need to make them last...and use junk XJs to keep ours going.

I sold xj led light kits (dome lamps leds, instrument leds, etc) for most of the last decade as a side-business/hobby. Sales went down considerably each year starting around 2017… not to say that tells us anything about how many there are, but I suspect there is some influence. I definitely feel like it’s rare to see a clean one anymore.
Also, I kinda wonder what junkyards look like these days…. 5-8 years ago when I frequented a large one in el paso, there would often be a dozen ZJs, a handful of 84-96 XJs and maybe two 97-01.
Last comment on this… I enjoyed getting photos of XJs back from people in faraway places… didn’t seem to matter where, foreign XJs almost always seem well kept. I suppose fuel prices influence that though… us north americans would drive less too if fuel was $12 a gallon.

I own 2 XJ's 88 and 96. My neighbor owns a 1972 Porsche 914 so I asked him if parts were hard to find, he said due to so many 914 enthusiasts needing parts Porsche is now making the parts so it's easy to get them. We XJ owners need to keep ours running maybe some manufacturer will catch on and do the same.

Unlike Porsche who merged with VW, Jeep was bought by Chrysler from AMC in 1987. By that time, the Cherokee had been in production for a few years. Then Chrysler was acquired by Daimler-Benz in 1998. Daimler sold Chrysler to Cerberus in 2007. By 2014, Fiat had acquired 100% of Chrysler. Then in 2021, FCA merged with another company and made Stellantis. Stellantis is the current owner of Chrysler which makes them the current owner of Jeep. With all this switching hands stuff, I doubt this new company will start building old Jeep parts again. They are more interested in selling a new Jeep because it's more profitable.
I’d say now in 2023. My rough estimate is there is still around 1.3 million or at least 1 million Jeep Cherokee XJ’s still out there. Every now and then you still see them out there. They’ve gone up in value quite a bit in the past 3 years. Despite the demand for the Jeep Cherokee XJ you can still find them cheap.

I always noticed that there were more XJ's on the road in the US than all other vehicles of the same period put together; of course I've not been able to visit for a few years now, so that might well have changed.
They're quite rare here now (although my neighbours wouldn't think so) but they come up for sale all the time, invariably at ridiculous prices (Jap. imports are nudging £20,000 - say, $23,500!) & still sell, presumably to classic car collectors.

Somebody is already manufacturing parts for us. Crown Automotive. That might be as good as it gets.

Good shape but a lot of money. Value prices are going up on these now like the K5 Blazer and full size Ford Bronco. 1996 Jeep Cherokee SE Sport Utility 2D | eBay US $26,888.00 There starting to pop up around $5k, 10k, 15K as the normal price for an XJ now. The days of getting one for $200-$700 are gone now.

Not many in the UK, although it's hard to get a full list here as the Cherokee name was also used for the US Liberty. Most of the XJs I've seen over here are Auto and Limited which gives an idea of the trend.
