Default How do i? Total newb question

Ok so I have a 5 speed in my jeep. 1st time having a 4x4 with a manual trans. Took her out today and tried to climb a little drop off about as tall as my hood. I'm on 31s with a 3.5" lift. Got up it the second try still trying to figure out the gas clutch combo that works. Well got up it but I slipped the clutch too much and smoke poured from under the jeep. Clutch still works ok. Any tips on how to avoid this ? I had it in 4hi. Pretty sure it was working the light was on. Sorry I'm a total newb here at all of this. Just not off roading or working on cars
