Ok, so I have been looking in my local craigslist ads. I found 2 that appeal to me and my wallet.
I was hoping that others could give me some advice and maybe tell me what other things I should look at that I may not be thinking of. Questions I should ask.

If it was me I'd pass on both

The 4 banger has no ***** so unless you are ok with a lot less power I'd pass on that cuz there are i6 xj's to be had for the same price.

The other one sounds like more work than I'd be willing to put in to it if you can save money for a bit longer hold on to it and spend it on a decent running 4.0L just my $0.02

 

How mechanically inclined are you? Both of these look ROUGH and will need quite a bit of work. The first one looks to have rust issues. I can't even imagine underneath the jeep. The second one, well the owners wording is extremely concerning and his repairs are questionable at best. A hard pass on both of those for me

 

2000 came with a 4 cyl? Weird

And I thought I remember reading something about removing front axles to fix a 4x4 problem was a no-bueno.

I too would keep searching.

 

i got a 2000 beauty on the outside but you dont know rust till you pull up the carpet!! lucky i could fix it. but look close and beware,it hides!

Pass on both of them.The Best years to look at are 91-99 skip the 00-01 those have their on problems you don't want.Find the most clean rust free virgin xj you can afford.Being your in new york its gona be hard to find a rust free xj so you might have to look a few states south of you if you want one.And also don't be scared of the zjs and wjs but the 99-02 wj with the 4.0 has the same head problems the 00-01 xj has.

 

I'd save a little more and buy a cleaner one.

 

Mu advice when buying an XJ is carry cash and go over everything twice like you would if considering a mail order bride......Then make an offer or pass if you like what you see.
