hey dose any one know how to tell the difference between clutch slipping or if you transmission is going? my pedal is soft but it when i go in to neutral the gears are still grinding a little

 

Check the fluid level in the transmission. The manual transmission it self will not "slip", it will either work or not work. Noise is caused by bad bearings, or broken parts inside. The clutch can slip when it is worn out, has oil on it from a oil leak someplace, or is not adjusted correctly (not so much a problem with hydraulic clutches). I quick and dirty test to see if the clutch is slipping would be to put it in 5th gear at a dead stop, then try to take off, the engine should stall instantly. Or you can cruise at a steady speed in 2nd gear and then punch the gas while watching the tachometer. If the RPMs go up without really accellerating, you got a slipping clutch. Can you describe what kind of noise and when do you hear it? Is the clutch engaged or not, what gear?
