my first jeep when i was 16 was an 1989 Cherokee Pioneer. i was climbing hills in a gravel pit and she got hot and blew a hole in the coolant resavior. Started getting warm and i stopped. Fixed the hole half assed with jb weld, filled it up with some water from the ditch and i was on my way.
same jeep- doing 90 down this new blacktop road (driving like your typical 16 year old) and the frost plug blew out and dumped all the coolant on the ground. made it to my destination with the temp gauge maxed out. got a new plug and she fired right up. sold it with 205k and that was 4 years ago and the guy was still driving it earlier this year.
that has been my on road incidents, never stranded.

the xj never let me down but had a 1969 Jeepster commando decided i would fallow my friends on their dirt bikes and i hit a huge rut and the rear leaf spring hangers ripped clean off the frame and broke my rear leaf springs. The guy i had bought the Jeepster from didn't do a penetrating weld when he weld on the 4 inch lift kit. Had my track bar rip off for the same reason going home that was some scary death wobble. Than my coil and clutch went out me in water half way up my grill in the middle of the night. That car was always going home on the back of a tow truck.

I think I'm going to buy a tow rope and keep it in the Jeep.
And a cell phone, some tools, a flashlight, rabbits foot, 4 leaf clover and a service manual.

A couple times due to overheats, I've since fixed that problem. Randomly it would not start until messing with the damn thing for a few minutes. Happened numerous times, tested spark, it was intermittent, tightened/cleaned battery connections and its been fine since.
Haha, my brother and dad are both toyota drivers, those dang things are always breaking down...
Anyways, headed home from work one day, three days after I bought it, I goose it at a green light, and after that it was running a little rough, I'm thinking "what the heck?". Next light I come to a stop at, steam pours out from the hood and I notice the temp guage is red lined. Drive to the next stop light, it dies. I start it when it turns green and limp it into a parking lot. Thankfully I was like 200 yards from a Super K Mart.
Two gallons of antifreeze and as many miles later, I pull up to my apartment. Pop the hood, have a really good look around (without steam billowing up in my face) and noticed that my front freeze plug was gone. My jeep was a Canadian one originally, and the front freeze plug was replaced with a block heater, the retaining nut inside of it had rusted and gave.
It still got me home just fine though. Slowly collecting stuff to replace the entire cooling system (gunna do a mild P&P on the head when I have it off too, hehe).

Yea mind did... radiator cracked down the side leaking it everywhere... i poped my hood and started to work on it on the side of the road... took out the fans to get to the left side of my radiator... found the crack but had no clue how i was gonna fix it... then i thought with a wild wild wild idea. DUCK TAPE... Lucky i had some CAMO DUCK TAPE in the back along with some antifreeze pre mixed... i Duck Taped it up good and filled her back up... then saied my prayers and started her up... left her running for 10 minutes ... then i started to move her and she stayed around 220 to 225 and the Duck Tape held up... I immediatly went to autozone and orderd and new radiator. water pump. upper and lower hoses. and new thermostat and it came in the next day and by that night i had it all put back togethor..... now she runs 200
I had the radiator go out and had to wait a while for it to cool so I could get water in it and get it home.
One of the worst problems I had with me 92 was sooo aggrivating because it took a long time to track. The Jeep would drive just fine but if I turned the turn signal or asked for a little more power for lights or windows the jeep would cut out really bad and sometimes would have a hard time getting it to start again.
Once while making a turn from a stop sign it just died and I had to pull into some random persons driveway at like 2am out in the middle of no where. The jeep would not start at all for about a half hour. Finally after doing absolutely nothing it started.
I probably put a couple hundred dollars in it trying to fix what I thought to be the problem with no luck.
Finally we decided to take off the wiring harness from the fuse block and wouldn't you know, the 60amp main wire wasn't in the harness any more. It had become corroded and was just sitting there. So everytime I was driving, it was close to shorting out.
I went to the junkyard and pulled a whole wiring harness and my stepdad(an electrician) wired in the whole thing and it never did it again. This all took like 5 or 6 months to find the problem. Drove me crazy!

I still have an intermittent problem, but it has never fully died or prevented me from moving, just made it slow.
The one time (knock on wood) that it stopped I was on my way to work and it just died pulling up to a stop sign. After waiting for my wife to bring me dirty clothes to change into it ended up being an ignition coil which I happened to have in the back. I initially thought the first problem I stated was an ignition coil, but it wasn't so I just kept it. Good thing I did. I did have to use the starter to drive myself off of a main street into a neighborhood. I love a manual trans.
