took a short drive, all lookin good, then oil goes to full scale 80 pounds. scared, but then i figure its the gage, not really pressure.
turn off to see if it resets,no good. other gages are normal. turn for home. turn off to try again, wont crank. get my trusty screwdriver. clunk,no crank. im stuck,no phone,no wallet!
i was just going around the block. sat a few minutes and tried screwdriver again. lucky it started,go home to barn. oil back to normal.
i can put in a brand new relay but i will never trust the starter so ill wait a week then pull it.
one thing is certain, I WILL NEVER TAKE A TRIP OR FEEL SAFE IN THIS JEEP THAT I HAVE DONE SO MUCH TO FIX RIGHT. if i was being cheap it would be different. i bust my butt to do it right.
probably trade it and take chances on something else.
question,,,whats next,,,and where will i be???
in 3 months it was good for 2 days,no trouble

I think your right if you plan on giving up with as little done on a 17 yr. old Jeep as what you have then buy a new whatever with a warranty. Guess I have had to work on about every thing I ever bought since I was 14 in 1961 except for new ones I have bought and a few used but that is the fun part of building an XJ from the start remember what JEEP stands for.

a vehicle is only as reliable as we make it. i put 600 mi a week on my xj with well over 200k miles on it. it just works. you rarely get something worth having with little investment. changing fluids and routine maintenance don't count. with regard to service and repair - you must go far beyond what meets the eye. good luck

each time its new . ive read of dozens of problems here.m i now expect them to happen as soon as i fix one so its just good to drive in the back field. i cant go anywhere with it and be sure ill get home..
trouble is,it runs and handles great as i recently said happily but a new failure is coming soon, too bad,i can predict and fix in advance huh...
ive been working on it and driving three months, then today, 80 pound oil pressure.a new one added to list .if it happens again where do i go?

If you throw in the towel and pull another early 2000s car into your garage, it will likely have a list of problems as well. Owning the XJ will give you one great advantage: the fact that Jeeps have one of the most dedicated fan bases in the world. If there is any vehicle capable of being maintained by an average joe, your looking at it: right in its square head lights.
good luck 👍

A friend of mine once said, "your either making car payments or paying repair bills, choose one."

i agree with everything you guys say and working on it i enjoy. ive just never had a vehicle so unpredictabl that im afraid to go anywhere in it. i enjoy driving it,but i cant go out in this cold weather and not be sure i can get home. i ordeered some relays and will put a new starter in it but i wont trust to go anywhere so im stuck.
based on others ive seen this one is in great shape from rust after i did the floors
i just went to the barn. it started just right. oil,all gages fine, like new, but i wont drive it to the store!!

JUST KEEP WORKING ON IT! Sooner or later you'll get it figured out and that alone will give you great confidence and appreciation for your work and the Jeep. I bought my 2000 and it has all kind of fleas but I keep chasing them down, fixing them and wait for the next issue to come up. I've done everything on your list AND some but keep going. It's not my daily driver but I'm bound and determined to make it so.
It's taken some time for me to be confident enough to drive it more than 100 miles and now I'm working towards doing a cross country trip with the Wife and mutt. I'll have waaaaay more than it's worth in it by the time the trip comes about but I'll be 100% confident in it's ability and my knowledge of it to go fearlessly anywhere.
If you like working on it, keep it. If not move on but I'll bet one day you'll regret it if you let it go. It's just stuff and anything can be fixed. Attitude counts more than money does.
Good luck

currysospicy says it well.you soun d as if you are one of two groups, either too cheap to go out and drop tons of money on the new shiny toy they tell us we need or that's what you can afford.anything with over 100k is going to manifest issues sometime.that is why it was for sale to begin with.if it runs great why sell?like others have said figure out what the real problem is.you'll have to that with anything else you get for the price.and you said you enjoy driving it.this is not an unsolicited ad,get aaa don't leave the house without your wallet and cell phone and you'll figure it out.don't throw the baby out with the wash water.
