Are you planning on doing a 4wd swap sometime? And with 2wd, dont let your tires get off the ground. Locked or not, the traction of one tire (or non with an open dif) will get u nowhere. And u should pick an choose where you go wisely. U have a partner to pull you out(you should always be wit sum1 anyways...) so don't worry about getting a little stuck but get yourself absolutely mired. that's no fun. And fun I'd the whole point.
Uhm, well, when I turn 17 (which is next October) I'm supposed to get my dads Jeep Commander XK, but if something goes differently I'll either end up getting a diff locker or doing a 4wd swap (Or just getting a whole new XJ, but we'll see.)

Make sure you or someone has a good ****** strap. Using a strap with metal hooks or a chain could cause some damage if you were to get hung up and need to get yanked out. Don't be shy, but don't be stupid with the skinny pedal either, you'll need it with 2wd. And i know chicks dig a muddy jeep but washing it right after you are done would make your life a lot easier because mud can be a ***** to clean after it sets for a couple days days. I wheel with some guys with duratracs and they clean good.
ARB makes a really nice one for less than $100. You want a ****** strap, not a tow strap, but a tow strap is much better than a chain. A ****** strap will stretch and assist in getting the vehicle out and do less damage to both vehicles if it's stuck good and you have to jerk it. Get a couple D-ring clevises to attach the strap to the vehicle. You can find them at home depot or tractor supply as well as online. Try not to loop a strap through itself, it will tie a really good knot. If you're pulling from the back you can go to a leaf spring shackle if there's nothing else to hook to, but it's not the greatest idea. If you're pulling from the front with nothing to hook to you can go around the sway bar mount at the unibody.
I'd put 31s at about 14 psi, you're going to want as much flotation and traction as possible. I like to take 10 minutes to air up afterwards than spend a couple hours stuck. Lots of momentum and skinny pedal, clean tires are key.

Don't worry I always think the same thing.

If the place you go is nearby (ie you don't need to drive far on road to get there) then lower your rear tires air pressure. This will help considerably with traction.
