This might be a completely pointless thread. But I'm interested in making my XJ as efficient as it can be. Was hopping some of you could throw in some ideals.
So far I've got gearing to appropriate sized tires.
*tire pressure
*clean air filter
*clean injectors and fuel lines & fuel filter
*regular maintenance stuff ie diff fluid, motor oil etc.
Feel free and add to it.

 

Keeping your foot out of it, and using the cruise on the HWY..
A good O2 sensor.. That's all I got.

 

Stickers and lose extra weight from the jeep. Weight like tools, tires, etc. if its just a little bit of stuff it probably wont matter but a ton will make a difference. This is very hypocritical of me lol, my rear storage space is a 12 sub box and a custom built drawer system with all my stuff in it which weighs about 70 lbs total haha

 

The most recent 4x4 Garage magazine has an article of how they improve 2-3 mpg on a Cherokee by installing Rock it hardware - Intake, TB & Spacer, Map Sensor and Cat Back exhaust. But, I don't think they were running 33's on that rig.

 

60-65mph max, new o2 sensor (upstream), remove roof racks, that's about it.

You'll never get great gas mileage with your 33" M/T tires and lift. That's just the way it is.

My 99 L6 gets great mileage, the computer shows it's avg at 20.2 MPG with mixed driving but mostly city. Over the weekend I put it on instant for a highway trip and on the flat it was reading 30-45 MPG, downhill was 55-99 and uphill was 8-15 MPG. I absolutely LOVE this SUV!!!!

 

I dont know why, but I get TERRIBLE gas mileage like EPIC bad lol. I go from my house to university which is basically highway for 20 min and it drops like half a quart (and by that i mean the small lines on the gauge in the 98 xj, by bad if that isnt the name :P ) so yeah it sucks. I think its worse than a hummer

 

It's not possible to get a steady gas mileage from what I've seen. I get 14 city 25 mph, 18 backroad 50 mph, 20 highway 55-60 mph, 23 one time only non stop trip from Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA to Lynchburg, VA 55 mph steady.
As mentioned before, I wouldn't count on good mpg with 33s mainly because the tire size gearing might not be as appropriate as u think. With 33s u should have somewhat decent highway, but horrible city mpg. I would definitely recommend a stroker or a diesel for that size tires. I don't think any bolt on is gonna do the trick.
But, my opinion stinks about as much as anybody else's.

 

X2 The biggest thing would probably just be driving style because while having all the other stuff does actually help, the way you drive will determine your MPG more than anything else. Like speeding, hard stops/starts, acceleration, idle time, and conditions really cause it to fluctuate.

 

get rid of the mechanical and put electric fan in. might need to upgrade altinator. gets less drag on the motor and resulsts in more HP too. Also better cooling. Taurus fans are popular to put in place of the mechanical fan.
you can also take out your ac.

 

Ever try to change the base timing?

 

Remove your doors... Less weight = Better Gas Mileage

 

Base timing is not adjustable on the 4.0L engine.
