General Cost of 98 xj build?
hey guys, i'm new to the cherokee world, picked up a 4.0L 2door standard xj. put a new sound system in it (old speakers were shot), looking to lift her up about 4.5 and wondering what i should expect to pay, and if anyone knows a shop that may specialize in this.

these prices are without install and tax. includes used parts and cheap quality parts,
you can do it
lots of little stuff I'm forgetting that will nickel and dime you but..
small lift and tires about $900
engine work/cooling $500
bigger
rc long arm 6.5 $700
hack n tap sye $200
used wheel and tire $600
little bigger:
steering upgrades $300
nicer shocks $300
better sye and driveshaft $400-$500
lots of armor and recovery... lots of ways/prices to do that
then if you want to go bigger drivetrain can cost $2000-$3000 for just the basics and a lunchbox with installs
any other crap like sound system paint and tint doesnt really count as part of a build
those are just creature comforts do them last
theres a ton of stuff. a good higher quality build with you installing everything yourself can be $5000-$6000 or less or more if you got the hookups and know-how

It could also run you $20000 if you try hard enough.

If you're in Toronto basically disregard everything anyone has said here. Our prices are not the same as americans. Talk to Eric at Staangs Fab(www.staangsfab.com) or Rockspyder4x4.com, addictionoffroad.com and www.justjeeps.com they're all close to you an all of them can help you pick a kit to fit your needs..
My personal favourite is Eric at Staangs, Wasn't impressed by Just jeeps, the other two ive only dealt with once or twice.

Thats true. But if you try hard enough I am sure you could spend $20000 american over there too. Hell, you could spend that much on just the sound system and still not have a crawler. hehehe

When you start, just start off with the first basic steps, lift, decent wheels tires. Unless you have deep pockets you may pace yourself some. Just make a list and start working it when you have the funds. Tell yourself there is no rush or it may become overwhelming.

Whatever you do, don't let my wife see this thread.
I got the XJ a couple weeks ago and I'm already way too deep. I could have easily sold it and bought a fully setup XJ for way less..
3.5 RE Lift kit with springs $600
RE Adjustable track bar ?
RE HD Tie rod $158
RE steering stabilizer $34
Bilstein 5100 shocks $240
5 Pro Comp 15x8 wheels $250
5 BFG All Terrain tires $750
Optima battery $209
HD Battery wiring $105
Regearing front and rear diffs - $400
Both Diffs Master re-build kit - $200
SYE - $230
Rear shaft - ? waiting to get exact length
ARB Full front bumper and X9000 Warn winch - $1000 (used)
Rear bumper with tire carrier - likely around $1000
sPOD for electrical control - $350
60K Full service - plugs, wires, belts, etc.
It is basically out of control and I need to take a deep breath or a vacation and calm down. I estimate that by the time I am done bringing it to trail worthy condition, I'll be in $7K to $8K - just for phase 1.
Phase 2 will be larger wheels, bushwackers, etc...
