Since this thread is already brought back, does anyone know if there's any easy way to have a hitch that sits a little higher and comes through the bumper rather than hang below it? My XJ doesn't have the valance anymore and I don't know if I'd like the look of it hanging down..

That's a good question. I believe it was the Reese though because I wanted the hook loops welded to the end braces instead of stand alone like the Curt.

No. You'd have to build your own.

I figured that'd be the case.. might be a good use for my spare rear hitch I have until a front bumper becomes a priority.

Default I built one out of an S-10 rear hitch

I will eventually run Superwinch Winch Wiring Quick Disconnects front and back and either build my cradle or buy one with easy to carry handels with a reciver mounted in the cargo area to keep the winch when not in use to keep the weight off the front or back.

Sorry to dig up an old post but I just installed a curt 31084 on mine. Last night I was thinking its really only held in place with 4 bolts...drilled front two and the the front sway bar bolt on each side. Does the rear sway bolt provide any strength under stress/pull (since the rear most mount on the receiver is slotted vs a bolt hole)? Anyone have issues or should I be adding more bolts somewhere. There's another hole in the "frame" kind of half way between front sway bolt and the new drilled hole...would it be wise to drill an additional hole in the receiver and fish a bolt thru there as well or would that just be weakening the receiver?

Sorry I'm a elec/comp engineer so I only know enough about mechanics/materials to be dangerous...

That front hole is a PIA to drill.

With a good bit, the front hole was easy, at least for me. As for the bolts holding it, those should be fine, even with the rear hole slotted. That bolt still holds it down with the rest of them but it would have to move forward to unseat it which is unlikely unless you plan on hanging the XJ by the mount. It's good enough for winching or they would've made it a hole instead of a slot.

Don't worry about it and move on to the next malfunction.

Well I was planning on suspending it in the air from a crane like those tundra or ford commercials from a few years ago...

But thanks, not like I don't have a pile of parts and a list of other stuff to fix already!

I used to install hitches for Uhaul. Yes you are correct, curt and drawtite both have a 9000lb line pull rating. These are designed for mounting winches. Why else put a hitch on the front.

You'll be fine.

So, how do you thread the bolt on the drivers side for the curt?
