Default First jeep. Is this a good buy?

The ad has been removed from craigslist or I'd link it.

The jeep is:

$3500
1996 SE
4.0L
AX15
4x4 (still checking on 231 or 242)

Listed as having new:
3.5" Lift
Wheels
Mud tires
Cat

I stopped by and looked it over my lunch hour.
-Driver side drip guard rusty (missing a cap-piece it seems)
-Minor fender-bender front left side, difficult to notice, pushed in maybe 1/2"
-Unsure of the rear axle, something I plan to check (for the 8.25)
-Interior is pretty clean but stock (Jeep was 14 years in public service in Washington)
-Didn't notice any rust when I took a look underneath, but I plan to check closer, especially passenger side and above gas tank.
-Looks to have new valve cover and hoses/wiring

Going for a test drive soon, check the 4x4 and for DW. Other than that, how does it sound? This is my first jeep and I want to keep it until it's no longer repairable (or I'm no longer repairable).

Correct and correct.

Thanks for the help. Been looking for a suitable, reasonably priced jeep for about 6 months now. Everyone out here wants a mint.

Found a new possibility. I've resigned to the fact that I just need to buy a good condition jeep and then install the specific parts I want later.

Thats usually best. However thats pretty good mileage for a old jeep and manual transmissions are hard to find. Talk them down and take a copy of the KBB value with you. My 98 se 4x4, 4 door bluebooks at about $1800 now.

KBB seems to be around 3600 to 3850. It's an auto, but I've been trying for a 5 speed for about 6 months and found nothing in a good price range.

Thanks for the links. The 1990 seems pretty good, but isn't that the Renix engine? What's the consensus of the Renix vs. the Chrysler?

And I'm definitely going for a 4x4. NP242 if I can get it. Big Bear is notorious for semi-snowy/semi-dry roads.
