Get a 96-99. 2000-2001 used 0331 heads that are prone to cracking. Look for low rust, especially underneath. Clicks taps are almost common, so don't let a little bit of a clank scare you away from a good deal. On the flip side, a loud knock or shuttering miss is bad news. If it's 4x4, be sure to test the system by finding a parking lot, shifting into 4 high, and going in a tight circle. If it clicks and pops, the 4x4 is in operating condition. Listen for a clank in the front or rear axles, Many came with the less-than-loved Dana 35 which will need replaced within the life of the Jeep. Seat brackets occasionally break so check for that. Check all electronic controls as well as automatic door locks, windows, etc; xj's are infamous for weak wiring. Just be cautious. There's a lot of CRAP for sale out there for way too much. Good luck!
