Fair price on an immaculate Jeep XJ
A guy on Craigslist has an 01 XJ limited 4x4 with 131,000 on the clock priced at 7000. To me this sounds like a lot, even though the price of these cars especially in amazing condition can fetch a pretty penny. The KBB on one of them in excellent condition puts it at roughly 4,500 on the high end. The rear bench and the passenger door have literally no wear, the interior is perfect and is the best I’ve seen in an XJ. Mechanically it looks and drives amazing, with no visible rust. Before I buy I’m having it inspected by my buddy who’s a mechanic so I get a good opinion on it. My main question is, is an XJ like this really worth 7k?

Value is extremely subjective, depending on where you live. Also KBB is not kind to our platform, out here in SoCal, book for a mid to late 90s in good condition is around 3-4k, but crap rigs regularly sell for 6k and up. So book isn't the answer, bottom line is what are YOU willing to part with to own it.

You can disregard KBB, it has no bearing on this discussion. A thing is worth precisely what the next person will pay for it (this is true for all things, houses, cars, boats, whatever).
Expect to see 5-7k for good condition XJs. Yes this is normal. For the last couple years, folks on this forum have been adjusting to the fact that these vehicles are getting harder to find, but the demand for them is still strong so the price is rising.
Whether you personally are willing to pay that much is a personal choice, but as long as -someone- does, then the 5-7k prices will stay and probably continue to go up slowly.
One caveat is that folks are still finding amazing deals where the seller is not a "jeeper" and has no idea about the value of a good condition XJ. But these deals are becoming more rare, and of course those deals only last a few hours on craigslist, etc.

I've nearly rebuilt everything on and in my 2000 XJ. All I need to do is the body finish paint and it'll look near new. It would take 7k or better to pry it away from me, maybe.
It's worth what someone is willing to pay. If you feel good about it, buy it.

Good point, yeah I would for sure pay 7 grand for a rebuilt 00 XJ. This one, has not had any work except the regular maintience which is why the price seems steep.

A really nice condition 01 Limited fully loaded with leather seats and what not went for 11 grand here recently. Seems to vary greatly by area but the DFW area seems to be higher priced than others right now.
There's a guy in Denton, Tx that buys straight XJs, ZJs, WJs and replaces trim, tires, suspension pieces when needed. Basically does a full refreshing without doing a full on restoration and they're the cleanest examples I've seen anywhere. They're as close as I've seen to show room fresh XJs without doing a full on restoration and he typically sells them for 5 to 7 grand sometimes a little more depending on mileage and what not.

Value is very dependent on the equipment list also. What rear diff is installed? A Dana 35 would make me want to pay less.
I wouldn't take anything less than $10K for my no rust, two door, 4.0L, five speed, Dana 44 rear diff laden XJ. As a matter of fact, after all the work, somebody would have to pry the keys and title out of my cold, closed by rigor mortis fist.
I live in Minnesota and have a rust free completely stock XJ that I bought in Denver for $6k. I don't regret it one bit as I was willing to pay a little more for a solid foundation to plan my build.
